Quarter 3 Standards

These are the standards your child will be graded on in Quarter 3.

English Language Arts

Kindergarten Reading Foundational Skills

Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial vowel, and final sounds in three-phoneme (CVC) words.

Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Associate the long and short sounds with common spellings for the 5 major vowels.

Read high-frequency sight words by sight (e.g., the, of, to, you, she, my, is, are, do, does, etc.)

Read emergent level texts with purpose and understanding.



Kindergarten Reading Informational Text

With prompting & support, identify the main idea and retell key details of a text.

With prompting & support, describe the connection between 2 individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.

Name the author and illustrator and be able to describe the role of each.

With prompting & support, describe the relationship between illustrations and the text in which they appear (e.g., what person, place, thing, or idea the illustration represents).

With prompting & support, identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.

With prompting & support, identify basic similarities and differences between two texts of the same topic.



Kindergarten Reading Literature
With prompting & support, retell familiar stories, including key details.

 

Kindergarten Writing
Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces.

With guidance & support, respond to questions and suggestions from peers to add details to strengthen writing as needed.

With guidance & support, explore a variety of digital tools to produce and publish writing.

Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of books by a favorite author and express opinions about them).

With guidance & support, recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.




Kindergarten Language
Demonstrate command of the conventions of Standard English grammar and usage while speaking & writing.
  Form regular plural nouns orally by adding /s/ or /es/ (e.g., dogs, wishes). 
  Capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun I.
   Write a letter or letters for most consonant and short vowel sounds.

Produce & expand complete sentences in shared language activities.

With guidance and support, explore word relationships and nuances in word meanings.  Identify real-life connections between words and their use (e.g., note places at school that are colorful).

Use words and phrases acquired through conversations, reading and being read to, and responding to texts.



Kindergarten Speaking & Listening
Participation in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups.

Confirm understanding of a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media by asking and answering questions about key details and requesting clarification if something is not understood.

Describe familiar people, places, things, and events.  With prompting & support, provide additional details.

 Add drawings or visual displays to descriptions as needed to provide additional details.




Math

Counting and Cardinality
Count to 100 by tens and ones.  Q3: Rote count to 70; count by 10’s to 100.

 

Geometry

Describe objects in the environment using names of shapes, and describe the relative positions of these objects using terms such as: above, below, beside, in front of, behind, and next to.

Correctly name shapes regardless of orientation or overall size.

Identify shapes as 2-D (flat) or 3-D (solid).

Model shapes in the world by building shapes from components (e.g., sticks and clay) and drawing shapes.

Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes.  For example: “Can you join these two triangles with full sides touching to make a rectangle?”

 

Operations & Algebraic Thinking

Represent addition and subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images, drawings, sounds, acting out, verbal explanations, expressions, or equations.

Solve addition and subtraction word problems.  Add and subtract within 10.

Decompose (break apart) numbers less than or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way.  (For example: 5 = 2 + 3 and 5 = 4 + 1)

For any number from 1-9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number.

Fluently add and subtract within 5.
